چکیده

We estimated the total marine and brackish-water fisheries catches from the Baltic Sea Large Marine Ecosystem, from 1950-2007, taken by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Using the ICES electronic catch database as the ̳reported data‘ baseline, we added several IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) catch components: ̳adjustments‘ (data source adjustments to the reported landings), ̳unreported‘ landings (termed ̳unallocated‘ by ICES), estimates of ̳discards‘, and estimates of ̳recreational catches‘. This ̳reconstructed total catch‘ was 53.5 million tonnes from 1950-2007, which is approximately 30% higher than landings officially reported by ICES for the same period. For the period since 2000 (2000-2007) this difference was 35%. Our reconstruction is likely an underestimate, as we used minimum values based on conservative assumptions. However, a conservative estimate is still preferable to the current default assumption of ̳zero catch‘ in the absence of officially-reported IUU data. Currently, ICES does not disclose countries that do or do not submit estimates of these other fisheries sectors to ICES, and this lack of transparency prevents countries that are either not collecting or not reporting data from being held accountable by the public and other stakeholders on issues of public resource use.

Reconstruction of Domestic Marine Fisheries Catches for Oman (1950-2015)

Domestic marine fisheries in Oman are increasingly viewed as the eventual economic alternative to the soon to be depleted oil reserves. This has galvanized the Omani government to invest in the management of its marine living resources. This study aims to provide a better estimation of Oman’s domestic marine fisheries catches that can be used to improve fisheries management in the country. Usin...

Impacts of Ocean Warming on China's Fisheries Catches: An Application of “Mean Temperature of the Catch” Concept

Ocean warming can strongly impact marine fisheries; notably, it can cause the “mean temperature of the catch” (MTC) to increase, an indicator of the tropicalization of fisheries catches. In this contribution, we explore MTC changes in three large marine ecosystems (LMEs) along China’s coasts, i.e., the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea LMEs, and their relationships to shifts of se...

Scenario simulations of future salinity and ecological consequences in the Baltic Sea and adjacent North Sea areas–implications for environmental monitoring

Substantial ecological changes occurred in the 1970s in the Northern Baltic during a temporary period of low salinity (S). This period was preceded by an episodic increase in the rainfall over the Baltic Sea watershed area. Several climate models, both global and regional, project an increase in the runoff of the Northern latitudes due to proceeding climate change. The aim of this study is to m...
